VINTAGE '50s / '60s CHARLES THOMPSON GOURMET PORCELAIN PEPPER MILL
A great vintage very tall 17” porcelain pepper mill by Charles Thompson Co. – the company known for their wonderful salt & pepper mills and who have been manufacturing them for decades.
The Olde Thompson Company first started making pepper mills in 1944 and are still making them today. It is a perfect gift for the gourmet cook and a fabulous addition to any kitchen.
The pepper mill was given to me in the late ‘70s/ early ‘80s by a friend of my mother’s when I admired it at her house. At that time she was in her late 60s or early 70s and would be over 100 years old today. She said that she had had it for quite a number of years
I emailed the Olde Thompson Co. to see what information they had on this and the following is the email that I received from them on March 18, 1990:
"Thank you for inquiring about our products.
After checking with the president of the company who took over the business in the mid 1960’s, seems he has never seen this specific mill before. At one time George Thompson used to make custom ceramic mills for a few china companies like Lennox. Seems this mill must have been made before Mr. Doug S--- took over the business, believed to be made in the early 1960’s or before.
I do apologize as I wish I had more information for you in this regard.
Olde Thompson, Inc.
After hearing that information, I looked at the pepper mill again and it does look like something that may have been by Lennox as I have Lennox dishes and this is very similar to the same type.
The pepper mill is trimmed with thin silver bands both at the top and bottom. There is a little slide opening on the top to put the peppercorns in. There is some wear or oxidation to the handle from use or age but does not detract from the uniqueness of this sky-high pepper mill.
It is perfect for a decorative kitchen accessory, when making Caesar salad or grilling this summer.
